A Limit Order in spot trading is a type of order that allows you to set a specific price at which you want to buy or sell an asset. A Limit Order is only executed if the market price reaches your specified limit price or a better one. This gives you more control over the price at which your order is executed.
However, in some cases, your limit order may be executed instantly—almost like a market order. Here's why:
Immediate Execution of a Limit Buy Order
If you place a Limit Buy Order at the same price or higher than the current best ask price (Sell 1), your order will be filled immediately. This happens because the order book already contains sell orders at or below your specified price. The system automatically matches your buy order with existing sell orders, resulting in immediate execution.
Immediate Execution of a Limit Sell Order
Similarly, if you place a Limit Sell Order at the same price or lower than the current best bid price (Buy 1), your order will also be executed immediately. This is because there are already buy orders in the order book at or above your specified price, allowing the system to match and fulfill your order instantly.
How to Prevent Your Order from Being Executed Immediately
If you want to avoid your limit order being executed right away, make sure to:
-
Set your buy price lower than the current market ask price.
-
Set your sell price higher than the current market bid price.
This way, your order will remain in the order book until the market price meets your conditions.
You can also use a Post Only order to ensure that your limit order is added to the order book as a maker order without matching immediately with any existing orders. If the order would execute immediately, the system will cancel it.
